artist statement

I am attracted to human beings for their smiles, the depth in their eyes, the subtlety in their gestures, the passion in their heads and hearts, and the infinity in their senses. These same things attract me to dance and performance. I am curious about the relationships between my thoughts, feelings and the tangible earth around me. I am a big salad of my own experiences, the experiences of those who have come before me and offered to share, and our inevitable futures.

I am interested in dance that both celebrates and distorts the human body, that reminds and reimagines, that creates symbiosis, and that makes those who interact with it feel alive, comforted, and sometimes even more lost than they were before. I am entertained by irony and the tension between humor and absurdity. I hope to encourage thought, deep thought, confused thought, complicated and nuanced thought. I am much more interested in gathering more questions than I am in answering them. Mostly, I am interested in patience.

I love to dance and perform like myself, as well as everything and anything my mind can imagine. Not everything is possible, but everything is imaginable. I love to feel empowered in my body, and I love to share that feeling with others through the exchange of movement. I take great care of the responsibility of education, of conversation, of being seen and heard. I also celebrate and embrace the ephemerality of performance, because everything’s important, but none of it matters. Or is it the other way around?
