CHOREOGRAPHy

Gabe received his BFA in Dance with a concentration in Choreography from Marymount Manhattan College, where he presented four works and received the Gold Key Honorable Mention for his studies.

During his senior year at Marymount, he was commissioned as Joffrey Ballet School NYC’s first “Emerging Choreographer” in 2018 by Angelica Stiskin to restage his work hmm (2018) on The Joffrey Ballet School NYC Jazz & Contemporary Trainees. He has since returned to choreograph, direct, and edit an original dance film entitled Armour of Shells (2020) with additional JBS Trainees.

During his time at Hubbard Street's Professional Program, Katz choreographed a new work entitled A Sense of Humor (2019), and presented it at both Lou Conte Dance Studio and the Studebaker Theatre.

Katz has also choreographed, directed, and produced his own dance films. In 2018, Gabe collaborated with Liana Kleinman and Jack Frerer of The Roof Films, and produced With Myself, with music by New York based musician Noah Halpern. In 2020, during the COVID19 pandemic quarantine, Gabe produced, and co-production with Angelica Stiskin of Joffrey Ballet School, filmed, and edited his film Patient & Persistent with musical performance by Northwestern University Professor and musician Lam Wong. Patient & Persistent was later presented at the Milwaukee Jewish Community Center as a part of their 2020 Tapestry Virtual Concert: Lessons from Life.

In 2021, Katz was commissioned to return to his alma mater, Marymount Manhattan College, where he create his newest work entitled tender, with musical composition and performance by New York based musician Lucy Yao, and assisted by Taylor Woodie. Around this time, he created a solo work entitled tender .5, which was performed at Arts On Site in NYC. In the summer of 2024, Katz brought back and reworked this solo into an iteration entitled tender, again, and performed it in collaboration with BODYSONNET’s INSTAL program at CPR – Center for Performance Research. The “tender” series lives on.

Choreographing for preprofessional companies and studios around the country has allowed Gabe to develop and refine his choreographic voice. He is incredibly grateful for the directors and young artists who have not only invited him in, but held his work with care, earnestness, generosity, and tenderness. One of the communities that has supported Gabe’s work time and time again is Miami Dance Collective, under the direction of Marie-Louise Gaschler, collaborating through education, restagings and reimaginings of old work, and new creations. Specifically between the years of 2023-2025, Gabe collaborated with the preprofessional company on a 20 minute work entitled MATTER. Later that year, this work was produced in collaboration with Gaschler and Amplified Productions media team members Mike Murphy, Dizzy Graham, and Dyson Campbell to create a new film, ultimately premiering in February of 2025.

Katz continues to choreograph at studios, schools, and dance companies around the country, as well as creating and presenting his own live performance and film based work.
